Composite fermions in the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect: Transport at finite wavevector
We consider the conductivity tensor for composite fermions in a close to
half-filled Landau band in the temperature regime where the scattering off the
potential and the trapped gauge field of random impurities dominates. The
Boltzmann equation approach is employed to calculate the quasiclassical
transport properties at finite effective magnetic field, wavevector and
frequency. We present an exact solution of the kinetic equation for all
parameter regimes. Our results allow a consistent description of recently

A Fermi Fluid Description of the Half-Filled Landau Level
We present a many-body approach to calculate the ground state properties of a
system of electrons in a half-filled Landau level. Our starting point is a
simplified version of the recently proposed trial wave function where one
includes the antisymmetrization operator to the bosonic Laughlin state. Using
the classical plasma analogy, we calculate the pair-correlation function, the
static structure function and the ground state energy in the thermodynamic
limit. These results are in good agreement with the expected behavior at

When Does Inflation Hurt Economic Growth? Different Nonlinearities for Different Economies
We show that the effects of inflation on growth change substantially as the inflation rate rises. Moreover the nonlinearities are quite different for industrial economies than for developing countries. We find that the threshold at which inflation first begins to seriously negatively affect growth is around 8% for industrial economies but 3% or less for developing countries. Marginal growth costs for developing countries then decline significantly above 50% inflation. Failure to account for nonlinearity biases downward the estimated effects of inflation on growth. Field-Induced Magnetic Order and Simultaneous Lattice Deformation in TlCuCl3
We report the results of Cu and Cl nuclear magnetic resonance experiments
(NMR) and thermal expansion measurements in magnetic fields in the coupled
dimer spin system TlCuCl3. We found that the field-induced antiferromagnetic
transition as confirmed by the splitting of NMR lines is slightly
discontinuous. The abrupt change of the electric field gradient at the Cl
sites, as well as the sizable change of the lattice constants, across the phase
boundary indicate that the magnetic order is accompanied by simultaneous

Evaluation of a Bayesian inference network for ligand-based virtual screening
Background
Bayesian inference networks enable the computation of the probability that an event will occur. They have been used previously to rank textual documents in order of decreasing relevance to a user-defined query. Here, we modify the approach to enable a Bayesian inference network to be used for chemical similarity searching, where a database is ranked in order of decreasing probability of bioactivity.
Results
Bayesian inference networks were implemented using two different types of network and four different types of belief function. Experiments with the MDDR and WOMBAT databases show that a Bayesian inference network can be used to provide effective ligand-based screening, especially when the active molecules being sought have a high degree of structural homogeneity; in such cases, the network substantially out-performs a conventional, Tanimoto-based similarity searching system. However, the effectiveness of the network is much less when structurally heterogeneous sets of actives are being sought.

Pulsed Magnetic Field Measurements of the Composite Fermion Effective Mass
Magnetotransport measurements of Composite Fermions (CF) are reported in 50 T
pulsed magnetic fields. The CF effective mass is found to increase
approximately linearly with the effective field , in agreement with our
earlier work at lower fields. For a of 14 T it reaches , over 20
times the band edge electron mass. Data from all fractions are unified by the
single parameter for all the samples studied over a wide range of
electron densities. The energy gap is found to increase like at

Modulation of the virus-receptor interaction by mutations in the V5 loop of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) following in vivo escape from neutralising antibody
<b>BACKGROUND:</b> In the acute phase of infection with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), the virus targets activated CD4+ T cells by utilising CD134 (OX40) as a primary attachment receptor and CXCR4 as a co-receptor. The nature of the virus-receptor interaction varies between isolates; strains such as GL8 and CPGammer recognise a "complex" determinant on CD134 formed by cysteine-rich domains (CRDs) 1 and 2 of the molecule while strains such as PPR and B2542 require a more "simple" determinant comprising CRD1 only for infection. These differences in receptor recognition manifest as variations in sensitivity to receptor antagonists. In this study, we ask whether the nature of the virus-receptor interaction evolves in vivo.<p></p>
<b>RESULTS:</b> Following infection with a homogeneous viral population derived from a pathogenic molecular clone, a quasispecies emerged comprising variants with distinct sensitivities to neutralising antibody and displaying evidence of conversion from a "complex" to a "simple" interaction with CD134. Escape from neutralising antibody was mediated primarily by length and sequence polymorphisms in the V5 region of Env, and these alterations in V5 modulated the virus-receptor interaction as indicated by altered sensitivities to antagonism by both anti-CD134 antibody and soluble CD134.<p></p>
<b>CONCLUSIONS:</b> The FIV-receptor interaction evolves under the selective pressure of the host humoral immune response, and the V5 loop contributes to the virus-receptor interaction. Our data are consistent with a model whereby viruses with distinct biological properties are present in early versus late infection and with a shift from a "complex" to a "simple" interaction with CD134 with time post-infection.<p></p>

Helicopter and ground emergency medical services transportation to hospital after major trauma in England: a comparative cohort study
Background: The utilization of helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) in modern trauma systems has been a source of debate for many years. This study set to establish the true impact of HEMS in England on survival for patients with major trauma.
Methods: A comparative cohort design using prospectively recorded data from the UK Trauma Audit and Research Network registry. 279 107 patients were identified between January 2012 and March 2017. The primary outcome measure was risk adjusted in-hospital mortality within propensity score matched cohorts using logistic regression analysis. Subset analyses were performed for subjects with prehospital Glasgow Coma Scale 29 and systolic blood pressure <90.
Results: The analysis was based on 61 733 adult patients directly admitted to major trauma centers: 54 185 ground emergency medical services (GEMS) and 7548 HEMS. HEMS patients were more likely male, younger, more severely injured, more likely to be victims of road traffic collisions and intubated at scene. Crude mortality was higher for HEMS patients. Logistic regression demonstrated a 15% reduction in the risk adjusted odds of death (OR=0.846; 95% CI 0.684 to 1.046) in favor of HEMS. When analyzed for patients previously noted to benefit most from HEMS, the odds of death were reduced further but remained statistically consistent with no effect. Sensitivity analysis on 5685 patients attended by a doctor on scene but transported by GEMS demonstrated a protective effect on mortality versus the standard GEMS response (OR 0.77; 95% CI 0.62 to 0.95).
Discussion: This prospective, level 3 cohort analysis demonstrates a non-significant survival advantage for patients transported by HEMS versus GEMS. Despite the large size of the cohort, the intrinsic mismatch in patient demographics limits the ability to statistically assess HEMS true benefit. It does, however, demonstrate an improved survival for patients attended by doctors on scene in addition to the GEMS response. Improvements in prehospital data and increased trauma unit reporting are required to accurately assess HEMS clinical and cost-effectiveness
Theory of Incompressible States in a Narrow Channel
We report on the properties of a system of interacting electrons in a narrow
channel in the quantum Hall effect regime. It is shown that an increase in the
strength of the Coulomb interaction causes abrupt changes in the width of the
charge-density profile of translationally invariant states. We derive a phase
diagram which includes many of the stable odd-denominator states as well as a
novel fractional quantum Hall state at lowest half-filled Landau level. The
collective mode evaluated at the half-filled case is strikingly similar to that
